On the trail of a peach

Tuesday, November 20
Georgia is known as the 'Peach State', so naturally we expected to see and hear lots about peaches. It turns out that middle Georgia, the area we are in, is the main peach growing area of the state. Georgia actually ranks third in the nation for peach production. Trying to find those elusive peach orchards turned out to be a bit of a challenge, but we persevered and managed to find a couple.

Highway 41 under the Interstate 75

Gotta love these roads!

These huge country homes are very impressive.

Mid-Georgia is a bit rolling. Pretty isn't it?

Ah ha! Could these be peach trees?

Me thinks so!

So what do they do with peaches around here?

Peach preserves

Canned peaches

The peach industry. Read about it below....... See the difference from old (1960's) and now.....

Sweepers and vacuums cleaning the pecan groves
We had lunch at the Lane Orchards and then headed back to Unadilla.

Wednesday thru Sunday, November 21 - 25
We spent the last few days staying close the the campground. We did head to Perry to the Walmart on Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Busy place and an even busier Interstate. Time to get off the road!

We made a couple of trips into and around the town over the last few days, but didn't go far.

The Unadilla Piggly Wiggly has a great meat counter.

Some businesses in Unadilla have seen better times.

The famous and delicious 57 Diner. Doesn't look like much from the outside, but try it and you'll love it!

Unadilla City Hall. Looks like an old service station.

Outside of town is the Dooly State Prison.

Baling hay in the field beside the campground. They had a lot of trouble getting the old bailer to tie the bales.

Lots of trains run through Unadilla, but you get used to them.
Here comes one now!

Sunset over the campground.

A lovely moonrise over the campground.

We have enjoyed our time in Mid-Georgia and hope to return one day as there's still lots to see. Tomorrow (Monday, November 26) we head to Florida and hopefully some warmer weather!

......and that was Our View From Here!

  4. Georgia is one of our most favourite states we’ve visited but had the worst humidity we’ve ever experienced. Peaches and Pecans...doesn’t get much better than that! Safe travels!

  5. Loved the Georgia country-sides. Shopped at a number of Piggly Wiggly stores.
Try stopping in Homosassa Springs and swim (float) with the Manatees.
    Be Safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.

  6. Love Georgia. Do you know that I bought a peach bbq sauce at a little country store near Albany called Mike's. They have some great sauces and other goodies that are their own brand.
    Safe travels.
