Our time near Savannah was over but there is so much more to Georgia than the coast. We packed up and headed inland a couple of hours to Unadilla. This is a good base from which to explore the central part of Georgia. There are lots of sights to see within an hour or so and we'll be here for 10 days so plenty of opportunity to tour.
We are staying at Southern Trails RV Resort on the outskirts of Unadilla. This happens to be our Home Park in the Coast to Coast system. We also have a Resort Parks International membership with this park as well. All that to say that we can stay at this park for 7 nights free every year. More than 7 nights costs $10/night. So it's a very inexpensive stay but you do get what you pay for. The park is pretty old and not well maintained. Sites are small and lots of permanent/seasonal residents. It's also VERY close to the busy I75. We are as far away as we can get from the highway but it's still pretty noisy. Oh, and there is a min train line just beside the Interstate to break up the truck noise. It's not all that bad really. Nice Pecan trees, horse pastures nearby, very friendly staff and a nice laundry room. Too cold for the outdoor pool though.

Interstate 16 heading west from Savannah. The median was covered in multi-colors of daisies (I think they were daisies). So colorful!

The town of Hawkinsville showing its pride for local military.

Lots of rain fell around here in the past week. Many ditches were full of water.
|
Reminds me of Jed Clampet's old cabin.

Nice lawns and Pecan trees everywhere.

Friday, November 16
Finally the sun shone! This was the first sunny day in over a week. They've had a full week of rain here (about 3 inches) and the folks here were very happy to see the rain gone.
We headed in to Perry, about 15 minutes north on I75. We'd heard of a Christmas Craft Sale at the State Fairgrounds, so off we went. Lots of pretty things.....and over priced as usual. We only bought a jar of Moonshine Pickles (we tried a sample and they were delicious). We listened to a gent singing a picking some great jazzy tunes for a while, then we left.
A grocery stop and a bit of a drive around town and then we headed back down the Interstate to Unadilla. We heard about a great diner that had a Friday night fish fry so we thought we might check it out. Well, let's just say we got fully immersed in the famous Georgia friendly culture! The gal we met at the front door with a 'Hey Y'all'! was just the start. She promptly hustled us inside and went through the menu with us. Friday night is take-out only, which was fine with us. She figured out what we would like to have....with only a little help from us. It was so funny. She had a very thick southern drawl and spoke several hundred words a minute. By the time our order was ready she had taken us on a tour of the restaurant, the fabulous artifacts in the old diner, we heard of the history of the restaurant, her family, her kids, her daily routine of running a restaurant with her family members, and.....a whole bunch more! So entertaining. The folks of central Georgia are just the nicest and genuine folks we have ever encountered! Oh, and the fish was excellent!

.....and that was Our View From Here!
I love Georgia. The folks are so friendly. Enjoy your time there.

These are some beautiful pictures, Dave. Thank you for sharing. I love Jed Clampett's look alike place, the colourful daisies and the cotton. :)
ReplyDeleteWe do love that area .Went to a good Sam Rally in Perry many years ago in the spring. Do love the accents and hospitality of these people here, Glad you got the fish fry at the 57 Diner we missed it. That campground works for us, not fancy but the price is right and we have our own house anyway.
ReplyDeleteMaybe check out Angel City, and interesting place for motorcycle rallies.
Your RV Park looks like an old KOA building. Glad the sun has finally come out for you.
ReplyDeleteI love Georgia, haven't been in years though. Gotta see if i can get hubby there soon. I wanted to checkout the Whistle Stope Cafe from Fried Green Tomatoes..Campground certainly works, especially for the price :) Love the Hawkinsviille pic!
