Georgia on our mind!

Thursday, November 8
We like the Myrtle Beach area a lot. So many things to see and such a variety of activities. But it was time to head further south to see what Georgia had in store for us.

Heading out on Hwy 17 in Myrtle Beach.

The Intercoastal Waterway.

The old bridge beside us and the new one we are on. We took the long way in order to stay on the divided highways. We used I95 to take us south.

Camp Lake Jasper is in Hardeeville, SC about 15 miles north of Savannah. Not an inexpensive park, but pretty nice. Its only a couple of years old.

Our nice large pull-through site.

The campground has a very nice pond and this observation deck.

Nope, never saw one!

Friday, November 9
We had heard so many good things about Savannah that we were so looking forward to our first visit.......and it didn't disappoint!

We made it!

The Talmadge Bridge over the back River and the Savannah River. The two rivers are really one big one.

The seaport of Savannah. We heard it was the fourth busiest in America.

Our first stop was the Visitor Center. Of course we walked out with a fist full of maps and brochures.

Historic Savannah is full of beautifully restored buildings. The Live Oak trees are dripping with Spanish Moss.

You could take a horse drawn carriage tour of the old city.

Johnny Mercer. Hometown hero.

The Market Square was full of small shops and restaurants.

We stopped at the Candy Kitchen. Lots to see here. This was an old candy-making machine.

These are their world-famous Pralines. She kindly gave us samples.

That is one big mixer! The copper kettles held melted candy.

They dropped the hot sugary goo onto trays of pecans.

Finished products.....for sale of course......and NOT cheap.

Savannah City Hall

This cute little guy was the free ferry that took you across the river to the Convention Center.

We stopped in at the Hyatt Regency which had a great lounge area that overlooked the River. Lots to see out there.

This antique was in the Hyatt. Very unique gearing.

Inside the Hyatt. Pretty nice!

We headed down Bay Street. This was the Cotton Exchange area. The offices were on the top level and the cotton warehouses were on the bottom floor.

There were a number of these wrought iron bridges that crossed the lower street.

The stones used on the lower street were actually from Britain. They were used as ballast in the ships that came from Britain. The ships returned full of cotton. Georgia was not well off to afford goods from Britain so the ships hauled......rocks.

The upper and lower streets.

Masons Hall

The City Squares were full of statues.

The Lucas Theater was built by Arthur Lucas Jr in 1921. Mr Lucas built and operated 40 theaters and financed a number of movies.

Lots of tour operators in Savannah. This one specialized in graveyard tours.

The temperature and high humidity was getting to us so we headed back to the campground. We planned on another visit to the City in a couple of days. Certainly there was lots more to see.

.....and that was Our View From Here!

  1. Some amazing sights to see for sure. I loved Georgia. A beautiful state, rich in history!! If you get to Albany go to the Ray Charles Plaza, a nice walking trail there as well. The Cheehaw State park is a good place to visit, they have a nice little zoo. The Civil Rights Museum is another place I enjoyed. If the Civil War is more to your interest be sure to check out Andersonville (a bit north of Albany). Amazing things to see there too. Plains, Georgia is not far from Andersonville and is of course the home town of President Jimmy Carter. Enjoy Georgia.
