Yuma shopping and Somerton tamales

Friday, December 20
We headed in to Yuma to do some shopping. Cheryl had a hair appointment at 4:30 so we had plenty of time to have a nice lunch and wander some stores.

Based on a recommendation from Deb (Kastle's Journey) we've been on the lookout for a new coffee maker and a pizza stone. Turns out every store is sold out of the type of coffee maker we have been looking for, but we did find a nice pizza stone at Target. Deb assures us the pizza stone will improve Cheryl's baking results so I'm all in! Deb has the coffee maker and tells us it is a nice improvement from their previous one. We'll keep looking for this model.

We stopped for lunch at Lute's. This is such a fun place. Good food, cold beer, friendly staff and lots of items to keep your interest while waiting for your food......which isn't a long wait.

This fella was entertaining the crowd with his little guitar/mandolin.

This thing looks like sort of dental instrument, or maybe a border inspection tool?

This gall could really pound on the ivories.

We had a great waitress, Denise. When we told her it had been a couple of years since we were here she said 'You gotta check out the new men's restroom!'. Well then....OK.....after my beer!

My lunch. Southwestern wrap and a Negro Modello to wash it down.

Cheryl's clam chowder (it was really good and you could eat it with a fork, just ask me how I know!) and a half turkey sandwich.

OK, so I had to check out the new restroom. This is the new urinal. Wide enough to accommodate three.....but you'd have to be good friends! It was filled with ice! Other than being....ahem....darn cold, it does kind of make you wonder what they do with the ice. Snow cones maybe!!

Cheryl went to Bobbi, the hairdresser that has a shop at Blue Sky RV Resort where we spent a couple of months two years ago. She really liked her so when we got to Yuma she quickly made an appointment to have her hair done. I went shopping and picked her up just after 6 PM. Bobbi did her usual fabulous job!!

Managed to catch a nice sunset from the Hair Shop.

It was such a nice morning that I sat outside for a spell and read. I've been alternating between David Baldacci and Lee Childs. Both are good authors and the stories are pretty good. I must be adjusting to retirement. I haven't sat down to read a book for fun in years. I've read about a dozen since the spring.

Just finished this one.....

Just started this one. A real page-turner.

Every year at this time the small town of Somerton hosts their Tamale Festival. Somerton is a few miles south of Yuma. It's a small town but about 30,000 folks show up to eat tamales, watch some great entertainment and just have a good time. The main street has large stage at one end and a smaller one about four blocks down Main Street. We didn't enjoy the very loud band on the big stage but we really liked the quieter stage at the other with lots of local school groups playing music and dancing. Definitely a dose of Mexican culture. Lots of tamales to eat too. There were 40 different vendors selling their own twist on the tamale. Tamales have fillings of meat or fruit. The fillings are placed inside a corn masa dough and rolled in a corn husk. They are then steamed. You can learn more and see pictures on Wikipedia here. So we ate our fill, then brought more home for supper. It was a fun way to spend an afternoon.

Lots of activities for the kids.

A noisy band on the big stage.

Lots of folks up......

........and down Main Street.

The quieter end. Lots of Mexican dancers.

Very colorful. The little girl in yellow was barely five. So enthusiastic!

Local Middle School band playing some cool jazz.

Some young hip-hop dancers. They were very good and well choreographed.

No visit to Somerton is complete without a trip to Elvira's Bakery. It doesn't look like much from the outside but some delicious goodies on the inside!

They have won lots of awards.

Nothing here is small. These heart shaped cookies are easily five inches across.

The donuts are even larger.....if that is possible.

We gotta get out of here! I'm gaining weight just breathing the air!

Back at Pilot Knob, we arrived just in time for Happy Hour over at Bill and Pat's. There is never a shortage of topics to be covered at our HH's. Today Bill described in detail how he fixed his toilet. We all agreed that given his expertise we would be calling on him to help with ours if/when the need arose! :-)

Cloudy today so no sunset. :-(

....and that was Our View From Here!

  2. Lute’s is a fun place. Every time we go there we notice something different. That urinal though was a very small improvement to the men’s room. Somerton looked like a good time. Merry Christmas to you both and we’ll see ya next year!

  3. Looks like you are having a great time. Awesome. Looking forward to Chery's critique baking with the pizza stone. Hopefully it helps. I have also found that using bakeware that is made here in the USA is much thicker and cooks better than the stuff I bought in Canada. I actually ordered from Amazon in Canada American bakeware for home, especially the muffin tins ... no more sticking including yorkshire puddings.

  8. Aww another Lutes fan, we love it but find most people we know won’t go because they think it is dirty … no we don’t agree and the food is great along with great prices!

I have had a pizza stone in my oven since we first got Maxx and it really does help, I think Cheryl will love it.

I have read all the Jack Reacher series, just waiting for a new one to come out … they are a good read ☺

  10. We are headed to Yuma in the next week or so to check out the flea market. We used to see ice in the urinals quite frequently in the bars we went to in Wisconsin.
