November 17 (Friday)
We took a drive from
the Campground to Cottonwood (about 30 minutes west) to have a look around the town. It was an overcast day and rain showers in the area. We never did get any rain on us.
| The town of Cottonwood. Old main Street shown here. |
| The hillside town of Jerome in the distance. Most towns have the first letter of their town's name on the hillside. |
Just outside of town is the Tuzigoot ruins. These are more of the Sinaguan Indian ruins we saw around Flagstaff. These ruins started out as a mountain of rubble before excavation and restoration began in 1930. The result of their work is on display today.
Just as we started
to tour the ruins a delightful class of second graders noisily made their way
toward us. They were polite and noisy, but let's say 'enthusiastic'. Once they
got to the top of the ruins they were met by a Park interpreter. They respectfully
listened to what he had to say. I learned some things by eves-dropping. :-)
We headed over to
Clarkdale, just a few miles away. We bought tickets to the Verde Valley Railway
train tour for Sunday. The small town is very scenic. The older parts of the town have very impressive plants and trees.
Then we headed back on Hwy 260, through the construction
to Camp Verde. They are twinning Hwy 260 to help with the traffic load. It will
be a great road when they are done but for the next couple of years this road
will be a slow-go.
That was Our View From Here!
They did a great job restoring Toozigoot. It's a must see when in the area.
ReplyDeleteSafe travels!
A very interesting place for sure.
DeleteTravel safe to your next stop.
We took the Railroad ride last year. Just OK in our opinion. Really liked downtown Cottonwood. Some excellent restaurants and there is a shop that sells all sorts of different Olive Oils and Vinegars. Never new there were so many different flavours. Very tasty.
ReplyDeleteYou'll want to read my post on the train ride. :-) It was interesting in a certain way!
DeleteI heard about that shop but didn't go there.
