Ghosts and Toads

November 5 (Sunday)

On the recommendation of Ray/Deb and Steve/Diane, we decided to head north about 20 minutes on Hwy 89 to road 585 which takes you down a gravel road to the old town of Pahreah or Paria. Just a ghost town now with no signs of buildings or former lives lived except for the old cemetery. The road from the highway was good gravel, but a bit narrow in places. Incredible scenery! Interesting to see the ages of those that died. From just a few months old, through adolescent and some even made it to ripe old age. Each name has a story.

We went as far as the road went……..to the Paria River. Today it was just a trickle, but in the past the Paria has caused extensive flooding of the valley. It even partially destroyed the old town.

We headed back to Hwy 89 and south to the Toadstools. This is a short hike that follows the hard flat rocky bottom of a dry stream for most of the way. A bit of scrambling and climbing near the toadstools but overall a pleasant hike.

The toadstools are incredible in that they seem to defy gravity and the elements to remain in their same position for centuries it seems. But really, how would we know what they looked like 500 years ago!?

Does this look like a bird?

This gives you an idea of size perspective. This is a close-up of the picture above.

We got back to Lone Rock in early afternoon and packed up for our nine mile trip into the Town of Page. We would be staying at the Page Lake Powell Campground. We got checked in and set up in time for a quick drink and then barbecued some burgers for supper.

$45/night with Good Sam. Campground is ok but for the price you should expect more. Laundry room was very clean and nearly every washer and dryer worked! Bonus!

That was Our View From Here.......

  1. Sometimes you have to pay to camp ... but if you have good laundry facilities it is definitely a bonus.
