Kingston is a small town about 45 minutes from Sussex. Other than it's incredible scenery it's claim to fame is its Saturday morning farmer's market. We got a late start and of course delayed by scouting out another covered bridge so we missed the farmer's market by about twenty minutes. No problem, we didn't really need anything and the scenery made up for it anyway. It was sunny but lots of wind and cool temperatures made for a nice driving day.
Can't get enough of the changing leaves.
Another covered bridge. There are twenty five of these within an hours drive. We have seen half of them.
Nice country church. There is a church about every ten miles it seems. Some are beautiful, others have seen better days.
We headed along the upper reaches of the Saint John River.
This is the Belleisle Bay off the Saint John River.
The ferry that takes passengers and cars across Belleisle Bay. Or you can drive around the bay. That would take about an hour.
This home must stay nice and cool in the summer. The vines keep the sun off the stone walls.
We managed to find some awesome back roads.
And we found another bridge!
A nice stream below the bridge.
Another great back road.
Cute little barn.
Lots of cabbage to be harvested yet.
And a whole lot of pumpkins!
We found our way up into the hills where beautiful views awaited.
I hope you're not bored with the fabulous foliage! We took hundreds of pictures.
Interesting cloud formation.
Sunday, October 7
Today was cloudy and cool, but the rain held off. We had heard about a great hike near Sussex that we wanted to try. It was called The Bluffs and it originates just a few miles outside of the town. The trail isn't marked but all you had to do was follow the cars to find it. There were dozens of cars along the road when we got there and even more when we left. Folks were either trying to wear off their Thanksgiving turkey or work up an appetite. If you don't like fall colours, just skip to the end!
The farms and acreages in the valley. Still lots of green grass.
The leaves formed a nice carpet to walk on.
Interesting how the leaves are green in their centre and so red on the outside.
Lots of roots to trip you up. As much as you wanted to gaze up at the leaves you had better pay attention to where you were stepping.
A tree out standing (or is that outstanding!) in it's field. This is a huge tree but i'm using a telephoto lens and am way up on a ridge looking down.
The highest ridge.
We met some folks from Edmonton (an hour or so north of where we live). That's them talking to Cheryl on the ridge.
The water tower that marks the beginning (or end) of the trail.
We went home and prepared our Thanksgiving chicken supper. We had stuffing, potatoes, cranberry jelly, veggies and barbecued chicken breast. We thought we earned it after our walk.
....and that was Our View From Here!
What a great hike, the scenery, and your pictures, are beautiful! How long did it take you to come up with the tree joke, pretty funny :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tour of the fall colours. Absolutely stunning.
ReplyDeleteGreat pics Dave! We lost the fall colours after leaving Maine and they’re just now starting in Indiana. Safe travels!
ReplyDeleteThat landscape is probably my favorite types of all. The mix of fields and trees. Love the colors of the maples, birch and poplar.... the covered bridges certainly bring the area over the top!
ReplyDeleteI love the barns, bridges and colors!! So incredibly beautiful! You can never have too many of any of those pics!!
