Corpus Christi

Wow! I'm really getting behind in blog posts. Everything is well with us and enjoying south Texas. I'll try to catch up on blogs over the next few days.

January 30
We had been skirting around the outside of Corpus Christi for the last few days. Today we bit the bullet and headed into a large metropolitan area, which is not our favorite thing to do. Turned out not so bad. We didn't explore the whole city and stayed to the quieter areas.

City of Corpus Christi

Building a new bridge over Tule Lake Channel. The Port of Corpus Christi is along the shores of the channel.

What a huge bridge-building machine!

The old bridge that is currently in use is in bad shape. It is over sixty years old and had a lifespan of  fifty.

The busy port of Corpus Christi

Lots of barges

Downtown US Courthouse

You can rent these scooters for $1.

Convention Center

The USS Lexington laying at anchor. She's a museum now. We didn't tour her though. It was a very cold and windy day. Not great for walking the deck of a carrier.

The Town Clock beside the Visitor Center.

Next to the Visitor Center were a number of historic buildings. They are not in their original location and have been moved here. Most are from significant families of the area. All are in great condition.

We went for lunch to the Art Museum that had a great view of the channel. We enjoyed a great lunch while watching the shipping action at the Port.

Tug escorting a ship through the channel.

The deck of the Lexington. They are working on the mast and antennae. You can just make out the scaffolding.

Barge passing through the channel.

Tug used to move the barges. The big 'bumpers' on the front (left)  push the barges.

More of downtown Corpus Christi. Lots of road work being done. Not sure if they were removing or installing new median material. I was too busy driving to notice!

Beach in downtown.

Very windy! Not great beach weather.

The Causeway across a portion of Corpus Christi Bay.

We spent most of the day hiding from the wind, but we did get a chance to see the City and some of its highlights.

....and that was Our View From Here!

  1. The Wind was really whipping up the waves. Great Pictures but I think you meant the Tug to move the Barges.
Be Safe and Enjoy the Warmer Weather to come.

    It's about time.

    1. We were on the Midway in San Diego last year so we didn't mind missing this one.

  3. Curious about the bags in the "more of downtown Corpus Christi' photo. What's in the bags and why are they lining the street?
Beautiful old homes. Thanks for taking me along on the tour.

    1. I updated the photo. Not sure but it was material they were using in the median. It seemed like they were removing whatever was in there but why bag it?? Guess I should have stopped to ask! :-)
