Bacon, shopping and a very nice visit

February 4 (Sunday)
Just after 7:30 I was out for a morning stroll. The generators hadn't yet started their song, the wind was down, the sun just up, and all was well with the world from my perspective at least. I headed down one of the many roads here in LaPosa. By the time I was about ready to turn around I came across these distinctive rigs. Nobody home, but now that I knew where they were we would drive by later to see if Tom and Deb, and Ken and Shirley were home.

Back at the trailer I found we had some bacon in the fridge that needed cooking. My brother-in-law Trevor put me on to a great way to cook it and keeping all the lingering ouders and mess outside. Keeps the heat outside as well. None of this may be new to any or many of you, but try it if you haven't.

I build a cooking utensil using a couple of thickneses of foil.

Pile on the bacon. Don't worry if it overlaps. With cooking the bacon will shrink and there will be room available.

We used Kroegers thick sliced today

Turn and cook to desired crispiness. Repeat with another batch if you have it.

We had some dehydrated hashbrowns to clean up so I used the same bacon drippings and foil to cook those.

Dehydrated hashbrowns we get from Costco. Easy to store and light weight. We use half a carton per meal. Just add water and wait about fifteen minutes for them to re-hydrate. Tasty too!
When done, just discard the foil and any drippings remaining in the garbage. If I could have found my cooking mat for the barbeque I would have cooked the eggs outside too, but the gremlins seem to have hidden it somewhere.

Enjoy the fresh bacon, then freeze the remaining. We place three of four strips in a sandwich baggy and when we need bacon we just pull out a bag and reheat for a few seconds in the microwave or fry pan, or barbeque.

After breakfast I emptied two five gallon buckets from our grey tanks. We have been camped here three days and used ten gallons of grey water, including showers. Not too bad. I took them to the dump station and at the same time filled two five gallon jugs of fresh water.

We headed into town to get a new short water hose to use with my pony pump to add water to the trailer. We also stopped at Scadden Wash just east of town to check out a spot to stay for one night next week. Our permit here at LAPosa ends on the 15th, but we don't check in to our next site until the 16th. It looks like Scadden Wash will do nicely.

Back at LaPosa we headed over to where Tom and Deb (Celebrating the Dance) and Ken and Shirley (Seeing America with Ken and Shirley) were camped. We saw that Tom and Deb were outside so we stopped for a 'quick' chat. A few minutes later Ken and Shirley got home and joined us. Our quick chat turned into a very pleasant three hours or so. We met both these fine couples at Bloggerfest. Tom and Deb are fron Upper Michigan and Ken and Shirley live in Nevada. It still amazes me that we find such an instant connection to people that share our lifestyle. If it hadn't been for Bloggerfest we would likely never have met, although I have followed their blogs from time to time. Having met them though provides a much deeper and closer connection. We could have talked for hours, but we over-stayed and both couples are heading out in the morning and I'm sure had things to do. So we said our see'ya laters and headed home. Safe travels you guys!

  2. Too bad you could not find your grill mat.
We can do 14 says boon docking and only use 75 gallons of water after some practice we can really conserve. Nice that you got to meet up with Tim, Deb, Ken and Shirley again, all super people.
If your LTVA permits ends the 15th you do not have to leave until the morning of the 16th. Thats what we do all the time you can check with the office.

  4. Your bacon looks delicious!! I love bacon on the grill. We have a flat iron pan we use but the foil certainly works out great too. It doesn't matter as long as you eat BACON!
If your permit says the 15th, that means the last night you stay and you leave on the 16th. We were told we could only dump on the day of the permit but if you went before the ranger is sitting there, you could take care of that on the 16th when you leave.

  5. After George introduced us to the Grill Mat we stocked up. I think K&B tools has some at a reasonable price. Most times we grill three pounds of Bacon and also freeze it for future use.
It is amazing how there is a more personal bond with people who share this lifestyle.
    Be safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.
